What does your institution need first?

Begin with your existing infrastructure, clinical governance and local regulatory pathway. Feasibility establishes the programme requirements.

Discussion preparation

A sequencing programme starts with the question.

A research laboratory, a diagnostic service and a national genomics programme can share instruments while needing different workflows. Define the purpose first, then assess the specimen pathway, assay performance, analysis, reporting and continuing quality oversight as one programme.

CDC’s NGS Quality Initiative provides a sequencing-focused quality-management framework for clinical and public-health laboratories. Its resources address the system around a test, as well as the testing workflow.

Questions for the programme brief

  1. What will the result support?

Specify the clinical or research question, the eligible population and the intended user of the report.

  2. What needs local validation?

Request the assay scope, acceptance criteria, analysis versions and evidence for the proposed specimen types.

  3. Who owns interpretation?

Identify laboratory review, clinical reporting, counselling or referral responsibilities and arrangements for updating findings.

What to prepare for review
  • Intended-use and specimen brief
  • Current instruments, staffing and quality baseline
  • Example report and validation evidence to review
